Program

What are the principles of sports management and how do sporting organisations succeed? Next Gen course workshops meet daily, offering insider access to the fast-paced sports industry. Learn how sports brands are built, organizations attract sponsors, fan experiences are enhanced, and major events are managed. We investigate sports principles from youth to professional levels through hands-on learning and discussion, with coursework combining individual and group projects. The curriculum emphasizes management, marketing, ethics, athletics at all levels, sponsorship, communications, broadcasting, and career strategies.

The program is taught by accomplished faculty who are leaders in sports management, selected for their expertise and ability to engage students. Beyond core instruction, the course features special visits from experts across various sports specialties.

We go from the theoretical to the practical as industry experts, commissioners, executives and athletes from such organizations as the NFL, NBA, Sportico, WNBA, MSG and more, discuss their roles followed by a Q&A with students.

Facilities & Accommodation

Sportico HQ

Daily workshops place an emphasis on participation and engagement. All morning workshops take place in the magnificent Sportico corporate offices at 475 Fifth Avenue opposite the New York Public Library in the heart of Manhattan. Students have exclusive access to the state-of-the-art Sportico Studio space each morning. You are literally in the center of all the action.

Accommodations

NextGen students stay at Columbia University in fully air-conditioned bedrooms in shared doubles on a single-gender hallway with bathrooms just down the hall. Housing is within easy walking distance of dining. We will use student responses to the housing questionnaire to pair roommates and group students in gender specific residence groups. Senior Staff will also live in residence and are available to help with any issues 24/7.

Meals

Next Gen students enjoy 2 meals a day throughout the program. While at Columbia, meals will be at Ferris Booth Commons where food stations offer varied options, including vegetarian fare, deli bar, salad stations, pizza, and more. Columbia dining is able to accommodate most dietary restrictions and preferences. Meals will be provided off-site during excursions.

Safety & Supervision

The safety, security and overall well-being of our students is paramount. We implement the following measures to ensure our students are well cared for and safe at all times.

Electronic key pass required for entry into residence hall buildings and bedrooms
Freedom to explore within limits; designated walking area around campus
Buddy system to ensure students never travel alone

When not in class, students enjoy a full and varied schedule of extracurricular activities to choose from as well as free-time to explore in groups. All visits, excursions and activities are included in the program fee, so students are never at a loss for something to do.

The city of New York provides a vibrant background for exploration and discovery, and every weekend, we take full advantage of all that it has to offer. Immerse yourself in the local culture as you explore the city, visit historic landmarks, and indulge in every cuisine imaginable. New York sightseeing will be customized to include additional options based on student interest and current events in the city.
